Who Controls Your Domain?

TLDWhen we interview a potential new client that has an existing website, one of the first questions we ask them is if they actually have control of their domain name, and if so, are they the administrative contact? The reason this is so critical is because when we bring a new account in for one of our managed hosting products we need to alter the domains DNS records to point nameservers. This must happen. Next to development, this is possibly the single most critical aspect of transitioning your website to a new provider.

What we find in a lot of cases is that most clients have no idea about their domain registration, much less who the administrative contacts or registrars are. This information is critical when registering a website. Another issue we run into a lot is that administrative contacts for the domain may no longer be with the company. Therefore the registration information is usually assigned to someone’s personal account that they no longer have any contact with. This scenario usually makes for an interesting exchange, especially if the person left the company on anything but good terms.

At Pleth, we have always tried to keep things simple for our clients. We believe that running your own business is hard enough work, and by bringing in a company like ours, it’s our job to make your life simpler. One way we do this is to manage domain registrations and dns information for our clients. By providing this service for our clients they can rest assured that their domain name will never expire or have dns issues down the road.

In my opinion, this is probably one of the most valuable services we provide.
